Obama would be formidable
Posted January 28th, 2008 by MikeRemember that except for Bill Clinton, Dems have a pretty lousy record of drafting Presidential candidates. So it’s very interesting to see the struggle between Hillary and Obama.
Bill Clinton worked his way through the typical Democrat slate of lukewarm candidates via his work in the Democratic Leadership Council. Then he built one of the best campaign crews ever, and smoked (heh) a very popular Republican president.
Hillary doesn’t seem to have anything near this type of effort. It’s much more of the typical Dem front-runner presidential campaign. The Demo-geeks like her, but when push comes to shove…will the country?
Obama, on the other hand, seems to be far, far more of a communicator than the traditional Dem candidate. This is getting lost in the shuffle a bit, but he’s given some really great speeches. He just sounds presidential. And that’s what’s important.
I don’t agree with his policies, but I sure wouldn’t want to debate him. He’d snag in-play Republican voters fairly easily because he talks like he has vision. None of the Republicans can match this.
That’s why Kennedy’s little endorsement is interesting. Old-school guy endorsing new-vision guy. Strange.
Meanwhile, all of this is largely irrelevant. The Democrat concept of superdelegates is going to vastly dilute the primary election results. It would be awfully sad to watch those people holding “Social Justice Now” signs have their convention railroaded by unelected delegates.
Meanwhile, all of THAT is largely irrelevant too. We’re 9 trillion in debt with no end in sight. Recession is probable. Ain’t nobody gonna fix this. And that’s not no double negative.

Mike, you made a couple very good points.
He does sound presidential. I think that’s something that none of the GOP candidates possess either. I am truly stuck wondering who I am going to vote for in the primaries. None of the GOP candidates sound like Presidents to me. Well, I am partial to one and that’s Ron Paul, but let’s get real.
You are absolutely right about snagging GOP votes. I can’t tell you the number of right wingers I’ve heard say that they would consider voting for Obama due to lack of agreeable candidates on the Republican ticket.
The truest statement you made was regarding Obama’s vision. He casts that vision like no one else can. He is selling his vision and himself and he’s doing a great job at it. He is a charismatic speaker and can be charming enough to woo many on the fence voters.
So the question is, what GOP candidate could actually stand a chance against Obama?
